Serve it with mashed potatoes or buttered egg noodles for a satisfying meal that everyone will love.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Salisbury Steak:

  • 1.5 lbs ground beef (80/20 blend for juiciness)
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt (or to taste)
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tbsp olive oil (for frying)

For the Gravy:

  • 1 cup mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch (mixed with 2 tbsp water to form a slurry)

Instructions

  • Prepare the Patties:

    • In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, chopped onion, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper.
    • Mix until just combined, then divide into 4-6 equal portions and shape into oval patties.
  • Cook the Patties:

    • Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
    • Sear the patties for about 3-4 minutes per side until browned. Remove from the pan and set aside.
  • Make the Gravy:

    • In the same skillet, melt butter and sauté sliced mushrooms until tender (about 3-4 minutes).
    • Stir in tomato paste and Dijon mustard, cooking for 1-2 minutes.
    • Pour in the beef broth, scraping up any browned bits from the pan for added flavor.
    • Add the cornstarch slurry and stir continuously until the gravy thickens.
  • Combine and Simmer:

    • Return the cooked patties to the skillet, covering them with the gravy.
    • Reduce heat to low and let simmer for 15 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
  • Serve and Enjoy:

    • Serve hot with mashed potatoes, buttered egg noodles, or steamed vegetables.
