Southern Chocolate Cobbler

Description

Southern Chocolate Cobbler is a classic Southern dessert that combines the richness of a molten chocolate cake with the gooey goodness of a pudding-like cobbler. With a crispy, crackly top and a luscious, fudgy center, this dessert is a chocolate lover’s dream. It’s made with pantry staples and requires no fancy equipment—just mix, bake, and enjoy warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream!

Ingredients

Scale

For the Batter:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ½ cup whole milk
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

For the Topping:

  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup brown sugar, packed
  • ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 ½ cups boiling water

🔹 Pro Tip: Use Dutch-processed cocoa for a deeper chocolate flavor.

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×9-inch baking dish with butter or nonstick spray.
  2. Prepare the batter: In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Add wet ingredients: Stir in milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract until a smooth batter forms.
  4. Spread batter evenly into the greased baking dish.
  5. Make the topping: In a small bowl, mix granulated sugar, brown sugar, and cocoa powder. Sprinkle evenly over the batter.
  6. Pour boiling water evenly over the top—do NOT stir. This creates the self-saucing effect as it bakes.
  7. Bake for 35-40 minutes, until the top is set and slightly crispy, but the center remains gooey.
  8. Let cool for 5 minutes before serving. The bottom will be pudding-like and fudgy.
  9. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

🔹 Baking Tip: If you want an extra gooey center, slightly underbake your cobbler by removing it at 35 minutes.
